In practice, lots of money and effort is invested in the functional implementation of digital business models. The result is websites, mobile apps, and e-commerce solutions, among other things, that perfectly fulfill the needs of product owners and technical systems. The problem is, someone else decides on and operates these solutions: users themselves. This does not mean a large target group, but rather individuals, each with different experiences, expectations and tasks.
Understanding users means recognising their needs and revealing their motives for action. With methods from cognitive psychology, as part of the research phase we first create a comprehensive picture of the usage habits of potential users. The information gleaned is portrayed using personas and translated into prototypical use scenarios.
Based on the insight phase, 3-5 usability experts begin with the exploratory review of the website, online shop or app. These are usually native speakers, so that they can best evaluate country-specific aspects of usability. We cover the most important languages worldwide and provide an analysis that takes cultural and legal aspects of the target country into consideration. Based on selected heuristics, each expert documents the usability problems uncovered and ranks them according to severity for later integration. Scientific research has shown that even just 3-5 experts can detect 90% of all usability problems and thus make a comprehensive investigation possible. The advantage is that this process is particularly quick and revealing compared with other testing methods, such as user testing or crowd testing.
Expanding on all this, we subsequently carry out a cognitive walk-through. The experts assume the role of the user, and, based on a pre-defined use scenario, they subdivide and evaluate every step necessary to achieve an action. Ideally, this use scenario is the “happy path” – the most common way to select and order products in your shop, a special use case of your app or the information search on your website.
The subsequent evaluation takes place with all project experts, who work together to calibrate the heuristic classification and the weighting in order to prepare the report. In the final phase of the evaluation, the insights are prepared visually and completed by recommendations for action by our departments. It is important to us to show quick and practicable improvements in the form of quick-wins – results that can be achieved quickly with minimal adjustments.
