How dmTECH Reimagined the Application Process

"What’s long been standard in e-commerce now also applies to job applications – an excellent experience makes the difference."

With this guiding principle, dmTECH, diva-e, and Storyblok completely rethought the career portal for dmTECH and dm. The Masterclass at OMR 2025 offered exclusive insights into the project – from the first pain points to the rollout in 14 countries.

More Visibility for dmTECH as an Employer for Tech Talent

Until recently, the dmTECH careers page was integrated into the general dm Group’s career platform. While this had advantages – as many applicants were familiar with the dm brand – it also posed challenges: IT-specific job listings from dmTECH often got lost in the overall company presence and were hard to find for tech-savvy talent.

With around 1,400 employees, dmTECH manages the entire IT infrastructure of the dm Group, which has 90,000 employees and over 4,000 stores in 14 countries. Yet, dmTECH remained nearly invisible as a standalone tech employer on the group career page – a major hurdle in a highly competitive applicant market.

The goal: Creating Maximum CMS Flexibility

Another challenge was the lack of flexibility in the CMS, which made maintaining and managing the site difficult. Planning a landing page sometimes required up to six months' lead time and budget for external service providers.

"We couldn’t set redirects, manage sitemaps, or create a robots.txt – basic CMS functions were simply missing."
Jenny WaibleEmployer Branding dmTECH

The existing platform offered neither a consistently user-friendly application experience nor the flexibility to manage the dmTECH career portal independently and in a target group-specific manner.

The Solution: Employee Experience Inspired by E-Commerce

The solution was a structured redesign modeled after e-commerce user experience – a user-centric approach implemented with diva-e and Storyblok as a headless CMS. The starting point was an in-depth UX/UI workshop with numerous dmTECH stakeholders. Instead of relying on gut feeling, personas, customer journeys, feedback, and usability tests formed the basis.

It quickly became clear: for applicants, a job profile feels like a product. This perspective helped the team immerse themselves in the user journey. In addition to the shop logic, the design system developed by diva-e for the dm shop was also adopted – enabling consistent branding and a harmonious candidate journey.

Throughout the project, clear milestones were set to provide structure and momentum – from kickoff to the discovery phase to step-by-step implementation in sprints – including data protection and accessibility analysis. Close collaboration between dmTECH and diva-e ensured seamless integration of complex topics like interfaces and tracking tools.

Despite detailed discovery and planning, the new portal went live just six months after the kickoff – a remarkably fast rollout.

The Result: More Visibility, Faster Processes, and Simpler Usability

Just three months after go-live, visibility had already increased – thanks to improved SEO, faster load times, and a strong foundation for future enhancements. Since then, visibility continues to rise.

Internally, the new site brought major relief. The system is flexible, modular, and scalable. Job data flows directly to the frontend via API. Content can be assembled using drag & drop. HR colleagues in all countries and locations can now independently manage content without any HTML knowledge. The new career site greatly simplifies the teams’ daily work.

The new portal now offers tailored content for different professional groups, real-time tracking, and full accessibility (WCAG AA). More videos and images from everyday work are used, and important interests of applicants – such as development opportunities – are highlighted more clearly on landing pages.

Conclusion: After Go-Live Is Before Go-Live

The dmTECH career portal now serves as a pilot for the entire dm Group. A rollout of the system is underway in all 14 countries and will be completed by the end of the year. Further personalized hub pages and AI personalization are also planned.
