A large number of "things" are connected to the internet and exchange data with other "things". This is the Internet of Things, or simply IoT for short. There is actually no general definition, as the term is heavily dependent on the area of application and the technologies used. In the industrial environment, for example, we speak of the "Industrial Internet of Things" (IIoT) or Industry 4.0. In the broadest sense, IoT describes those services that make it possible to connect physical and virtual objects with each other and have them work together thanks to modern information and communication technologies. Applications can thus be automated and jobs completed without external intervention. Machines, systems, goods and people can communicate directly with each other.

Care must be taken to ensure that the data is used for the purpose for which it was collected. In the event of a change of purpose, companies must inform their customers as quickly as possible. This information must be transparent as to how the data is processed. However, with the Internet of Things, equipped with artificial intelligence, it is difficult to understand which path the data takes. It is therefore advisable to anonymize the data right from the start. One possible approach in this context is privacy by design. This approach stipulates that all processing of personal data must comply with all data protection standards.
