Advantages of the MACH architecture

New voucher system? Another payment provider? The requirements in e-commerce change often and quickly, but previous IT solutions are usually rigid. In predefined enterprise suites, there is little leeway for (re)designing the architecture. Extensive releases combined with long cycles are the rule here, and it takes a long time before a new component can finally be launched.

With the flexible approach of the MACH architecture, you can react faster in development. The modular approach makes it easier to try out, integrate or replace applications. This minimizes business risks. The modern architecture approach offers these further advantages:

  • Open: The use of open standards based on APIs supports interoperability between third-party and proprietary services.

  • Modular: Each component represents a system in the MACH architecture and can be used independently. This reduces the complexity of the system and facilitates both the expansion and maintenance of the IT infrastructure.

  • Secure: Processes isolated from each other and only the most necessary authorizations per component minimize a failure of the entire system. In addition, a possible attack surface from the outside is limited.

The features of MACH architecture

The acronym MACH stands for Microservices, API-First, Cloud native and Headless. In the following, we briefly explain what these technical terms actually stand for.

Complex IT applications are broken down into smaller, independent modules and functionally separated from each other. We apply Domain-driven Design (DDD) and Bounded Context for this purpose. Each of the Microservices fulfills a specific task and can be developed, updated and scaled independently of one another. This enables efficient management, maintenance and expandability of the IT infrastructure.

APIs are programming interfaces that allow software components to communicate with each other and exchange information. Within the MACH architecture, every function should be addressable via API so that different applications interact seamlessly with each other. The goal is to create a modular and scalable IT infrastructure that is easy to expand and adapt. As well as enabling configurations to be automated.

In this strategy, applications are developed from the ground up for the cloud and technologies are used that are specifically adapted to these platforms. These can be public, private and hybrid clouds. Services such as serverless computing, containers and service meshes are used. MACH architecture places great emphasis on optimal use of cloud resources to ensure high availability and resilience of the IT infrastructure.

With this approach, the visible user interface is decoupled from the underlying logic and data processing in the backend. This allows complete design freedom in the MACH architecture and the use of modern frontend technologies connected via API (RESTful, GraphQL). The frontend can be operated seamlessly on all devices and applications such as website, mobile apps, etc. and provides an improved user experience.

When it comes to special requirements, customizing a large, predefined enterprise suite reaches its technical and time limits. This is when the modern MACH architecture can show its strengths.
